Knitting and Ripping and Knitting and Ripping March 28, 2009

One of the things that comes with knitting is the act of ripping out your knitting.  Tearing it back and redoing what you thought would work.  This is more pronounced as an activity when designing your own knitwear.  But even with patterns; like the unnamed knitting magazine sweater that I got to the shoulders and realized that the “large” wouldn’t fit a gnat.  I think that it can be a metaphor for life too, the backtracking and asking yourself where did I go wrong?  What did I do to make this situation worse?  Is it really my fault or is it that the pattern is flawed?  Some people, hate to rip out, all that work gone to waste, but for me if every time I see that wonky stitch or that skip in the pattern or that cable I am sure I put an extra row on, I will chastize myself for not ripping it out.  Again a metaphor for life, is it really something you should repeatedly pester yourself over?  Is it worth the time and energy to worry about the wonky stitch that only you are aware of?  What of the flawed sweater that everyone notices, that people point out your error and you are filled with shame, how did you even miss that?  But in the end you rip the thing out and try to repair the damage but do you just toss out the sweater, rip it out and make a purse out of it or start all over again, I will make this sweater work no matter what.  All questions that again tie to life.  What if someone hates your sweater even though it is perfect, or hates your sweater because they hate the color orange, or hate it because they perceive it as something other than what you do?  Do you care?  Do you let their opinion pass in your mind and not dwell on it?  Do you hold it and examine it and ask yourself what fundamental truths are in their opinions?  Or do you simply toss the opinion out and say who cares what they think, I am going to keep wearing this cloak.

Ah the joys of teaching.  Ah the sorrows of a child lost.  Ah the angst of a human life filled with small mistakes that sometimes are writ large.

Shen Wei March 17, 2009

My friend Karen is a musician and when she was younger a dancer.  She is many years, decades even older than I but I connect with her on an artistic, spiritual and intellectual level.  Over the years she and her life partner, who is my yoga teacher, have given us tickets to various cultural events, if they were unable to attend.  They have season tickets to many of the local symphony’s, operas and so forth.  So I was able to return the favor for once when my boss, Carol Terry, who is very active in the local arts community, offered free tickets to see the culmination of an artist in recidency program for Shen Wei.  Shen Wei choreographed a portion of the Bejing olympics.  It was a symposium really where they talked about the inspiration of the Tibetan people, The Silk Road and Bangor Wat in the dance.  It was a shortened performance, put together in only a three days that will be coming back here to Syracuse in September for the full performance.  It will be a “don’t miss” kind of thing.  Truly inspirational and cutting edge dance.

My daughter had to take these credit hours in various activities in order to graduate in a special program at school.  So I signed her up to take an ATC class at the quilt store.  She loves collage so I thought she might really like to do this.  I also took the class rather than sit there and do nothing for 2 hours.   So I made this really cute crow ATC.

A Spinning Wheel March 6, 2009

Okay so I did it but not exactly as I expected it to be…I have been saving slowly for a spinning wheel, five dollars here, ten there, a couple twenties leftover from selling paintings, and a part time job at Mission Rose.  But as I researched the cost I knew I had a long long ways to go before I could afford a spinning wheel.  Then a couple days ago, as I headed into the food co-op, a locally owned organic grocery, I noticed a sign for a used spinning wheel with carders, sheep fiber, a lazy kate, several spools and an Ashford Traveler.  I called the woman immediately because the price was unreal, compared to what I was seeing for a new wheel – alone.  I went to her home and she was lovely, really I felt immediately connected to her and she was like a little drop of love from the universe.  As she said, everything happens for a reason, and god (or is it God) brought you here today.  Anyway, enough of my spiritual gobbledygook.  So I bought it!  I have to repay my savings account when I get my check from working on the school yearbook, but I saved at least half what it would have cost to get a new one.  I came home and immediately tried it.  I have a thing to say here. I DESPISE the color brown, I dislike brown leather coats, I dislike brown leather purses and I only tolerate brown leather shoes because you cannot wear black with navy blue.   Just for the record I have never liked brown or orange.  Orange is the one color I just cannot stand.  It is ugly, I only like it in pumpkins and oranges.  Seriously.  But for some odd reason people always buy me stuff or give me stuff with brown in it.  I don’t mean to look a gift horse in the mouth and I am sorry to rant here…but gees’.  Now that I have a two sided closet that I do not have to share with anyone I have everything brown on one side and everything I actually wear and use on the other.  So someone gave me some roving, again I don’t mean to be persnickity but it’s brownish orange…really?  Oh yeah.  But I saw it as a blessing today…what perfect roving to practice on with my new spinning wheel.  So I did.  I did okay too.  My yarn is bumpy and it broke a couple times but I was really getting the hang of it and it really beats the drop spindle by the power of 10 – at least.

Lion Brand Moonlight Mohair Selection

Oh the possibilities, evening bags, fronds of deep sea plants swaying in the tides, glittering faerie hair, the list goes on.  I really wanted to make cute little evening bags out of it, but I also see that much can be done with the little scraps.  I think my Mom the art quilter extraordinaire and my Connie crazy quilting queen might see the possibilities too. I think I will have to share.

Guerilla Knitting March 1, 2009

I stumbled on this link when I was looking for blogs about guerilla knitting, basically graffitti in the fiber form.  Completely removable, requires no scrubbing and does not deface public property permanently.  Kind of the Keith Haring chalk on a bulletin board version of public art.
